Migraine headaches

Migraine is characterised by episodes of severe headache plus a range of additional migraine symptoms, including nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to light (photophobia) and sound (phonophobia). It affects up to 15% of people in the UK, and is up to three times more common in women than men.

Who suffers from migraine?

Migraine often begins in puberty, with the majority of sufferers affected before the age of 30. The prevalence is at its greatest between 20 and 50 years. Attack frequency is on average once a month.

Causes of migraine

Migraine is thought to be due to a widening of the blood vessels around the brain. This stimulates the neighbouring nerve endings, which trigger pain and inflammation. The brain chemical, serotonin, has a big part to play in this process as it has been found that serotonin levels drop during migraine. This causes the widening of these blood vessels and the stimulation of the nerve endings.

Sumatriptan

Migraine symptoms may be caused by the temporary swelling of blood vessels in the head due to a temporary imbalance in the body’s natural chemicals. Sumatriptan, the active ingredient in Imigran Recovery, helps to restore this chemical imbalance back to normal. This helps to relieve the root cause of the migraine itself and its symptoms.
